When do you escape JSON?

  • Embedding JSON in code — paste a payload into a JavaScript or Python string.
  • Logging — keep newlines and quotes on one line.
  • Debugging APIs — turn an escaped \"…\" blob back into readable JSON, then format it.

How it works

Escape wraps your text with JSON.stringify semantics: quotes, backslashes, newlines and control characters become \", \\, \n and \t. Unescape reverses a quoted JSON string literal back to raw text.
