How to compare JSON
- Paste the original document on the left and the modified document on the right.
- Press Compare.
- Review each difference by path, e.g.
address.cityortags.1.
When is a JSON diff useful?
- API debugging — compare a working response with a broken one.
- Config reviews — confirm only the intended keys changed before deploy.
- Data migrations — verify a transformation preserved every field.
The comparison is structural, not textual: key order and whitespace are ignored, so reformatting alone shows as “no differences”. Arrays are compared by index. For large documents only the first 500 differences are computed to keep the page fast.
Tips for clean diffs
- Validate both documents first with the JSON validator.
- Normalize formatting with the JSON formatter so you compare data, not spacing.
- Sort keys with the JSON sorter before comparing configs.
